FAQ - Ganterud Balancing Suspension Device

Function Safety Operation & Maintenance Lifespan & Load Technical Specifications Support

Functionality of the Device

What is the imbalance capacity?

It is the maximum allowed difference in load between hook A and hook B that the Ganterud levelling device is designed for.

Can I activate the fast mode during lifting?

NO! This mode is solely for quickly balancing chain lengths in an unloaded state.

What is the "release" function, and can the load shift if accidentally activated?
The “release” function can help to straighten the chain and find the Equilibrium before lifting. This function can also assist when the Ganterud levelling device is used as a snatch block when turning a wall for example.
The “release” function deactivates the brake. The brake MUST always be activated before lifting above ground to avoid load moving uncontrolled. This function should NEVER be used when load is above ground!
Can the chain be shortened?

Yes, this can be done by PHILIPP GmbH. A longer chain can also be installed. It is advisable to check before ordering whether a longer or shorter chain is appropriate.

Can I rest heavy objects while levelling to reduce the load on the Ganterud levelling device?

NO! For all PRO devices: "Levelling only above ground!" Resting the load may disrupt its balance, causing higher forces/loads and potentially overloading the motor.

What if I am unsure about the weight of the load I want to lift/level?

Contact PHILIPP GmbH for assistance in correctly determining your load. Using a crane scale on one or both hooks is a common and safe solution.

What must I check before using the Ganterud levelling device??

Contact PHILIPP GmbH for assistance in correctly determining your load. Using a crane scale on one of the chain sides is also a common solution.

  • Read and understand the user manual
  • Visually inspect the Ganterud levelling device
  • Turn on the Ganterud levelling device with the main power switch and check battery status
  • Test all functions
  • Plan the lifting process / conduct a risk assessment

Safety

What safety features does the Ganterud levelling device provide? (Auto shut off, weight display…)

The device doesn’t have a built-in overload shut off or weight display because external crane scales on each hook is the safest/easiest way of determining the loads which will differ during the levelling. In case of uncertainty, consult PHILIPP GmbH. All load bearing components have a safety factor of at least 4:1 against breakage and the hooks stops automatically at its end positions.

Can I use the Ganterud levelling device for lifting with one of the hooks?

NO! Always use both hooks!

How do I charge the Ganterud levelling device?

Turn off the Ganterud levelling device with the main power switch and connect the power cable to an outlet.

Operation & Maintenance

What does the "A" on the remote control mean?

DO NOT press it! It will delete the remote control from the Ganterud levelling device and must be synchronized again – see user manual for details.

Where can I check the battery status?

Behind the lid in the front on the Ganterud levelling device.

Maintenance status - color coding:

  • GREEN = >75%
  • YELLOW = >50%
  • RED = < <25%

The indication may vary in design depending on the model.

Lifespan & Load

For how long can I use the Ganterud levelling device before charging?

It depends on the load, how the load is handled, load difference etc. For "normal usage," about a week. For demanding tasks (e.g., handling heavy staircases), 1-2 days.

Can the Ganterud levelling device be charged in rain/snow?

Even though Ganterud levelling device is designed for IP65, it should be protected from harsh weather/precipitation. The lid in front should be closed as much as possible and place the Ganterud levelling device as protected as possible during charging

Who should inspect and conduct service on the Ganterud levelling device, and how often?

PHILIPP GmbH is the certified service partner in the DACH region and the Ganterud levelling device must be inspected and serviced annually.

Technical Specifications

What is the range of the remote control?

Approximately 100 meters in an unobstructed line of sight.

Is the levelling force sufficient for my desired object?

Reference Example: A customer in Munich required handling 28-ton stairs with landings from a flatbed trailer (horizontal position) to a 65° angle. The maximum load difference between the hooks on both sides was approximately 4.5 tons in total. We managed this with two Ganterud L20-3 Pro units. If uncertain, contact PHILIPP GmbH for advice!
